Brisingamen choker by redLillith Brisingamen choker by redLillith
FINIS!!!!! :faint:

please forgive the file size . . . I am a detail whore. ;)

commissioned by :iconaeislugh: for his lovely lady. I've dreamed of doing something like this! he asked for a Nordic choker, based on the legend of Brisingamen (the infamous one) - unfortunately the only details research turns up is that it is gold, intricate, besparkled with amber, and drapes across the breast bones up to the shoulders.

over 600 gold and amber toned seed beads , two drapes of gold figaro chain, and an antiqued gold centerpiece with topaz. ;) there are 6 graduating larger gold-linked amber drapes as well, framing the center (82 4mm baltic . . gorgeous stuff!) - accented with 6 faceted 6mm citrines and one gold AB citrine czech glass bead (6mm). added 2 gold chain drapes that are studded with amber-toned czech bicone beads and padded the upper net with light gold satin dotted with gold seed beads (cuz that damned gold lace is scratchy!!). pale gold silk tie-backs and the choker back is double backed. very comfortable on! :)

well, there is my take on an established legend. hopefully, I did it justice! I only know I am extremely proud of this. and as my client is happy, that's all that matters! :D (yeah . . criticize away . . . I know it's gorgeous. *raspberry* )

*I give :iconjewelryclub: permission to display in their club gallery.

Hi redLillith. I really like your work. A lot!
I have some questions for you though. Where did you get the "..... it is gold, intricate, besparkled with amber, and drapes across the breast bones up to the shoulders.", information from? Could you please post a link? One does read a lot of conjecture !!A LOT!! when reading up on this stuff. For instance, I've read that Brisingamen is "The fires we burn on Midsummernight along the coast and on top of hills and mountains". I don't know if this is true or not but it comes from a man I respect a lot when it comes to norse mythology. Kind of fits the "waves" on your design, I think :)
I'm currently working with (mainly)norse mythology myself and my Freja needs her Brisingamen. I'm thinking of making a necklace, that has a stone with a recess in it, that can sustain a live flame for a few minuttes. Maybe you could give me some advice or point me in the right direction?
I've added some pictures of Freja that I hope you enjoy. Please respect that this is a work in process. Bear with me :) The two females behind her are the cats that pulls her carriage and guards her house(I think). The pig at her feet is her lover Ottar disuised as the hog Hildisvini -a paralel to Frejas brother Frejs pig Gyldenbørste or Goldenbrush in english. The original is by far the best I know. It's a true case of don't fix what's not broken but like I said this project is far from finished :)

oh no, you are fine! :D  and sorry for the delayed response.... my life isn't really my own at the moment.  ;)
will try to hunt down the names of the reference books, but truth be told they aren't in English.. they are Danish. they belong to a friend's mother who is a retired teacher in Denmark, and this was from one of her class books. no longer in print, for the last 30 years! but I will see what I can get from her by way of info for you. and never be afraid to pimp your own projects/art! we all learn from each other, and networking is vital for our community to feel connected.  ;)  can't wait to go look!

Even though it looks more like an rococo or baroque inspired piece, it's a piece of breathtaking detail and craftmanship! I adore it! I would probably send you some drawing and request a piece but I probably can't afford it, haha..!

 why thanks! I did my level best to accommodate my client, and incorporate any ideas he had in regards to the mythological piece. it was a lot of work, and my eyes got buggy looking at so much gold for so long, but it was really worth it. I am very very proud of this one still! ^_^

you never know till you try! lol. I am actually not a very expensive crafter. ;) if its a challenge, I normally just dive in head first. the most pricey part of what I do is sometimes finding just the right components. but I do my best to keep the quality high and price reasonable. wearable art is useless if it's extravagantly priced. ;)

oh wow - i was looking up godesses to suit my name (i have the coolest name - it basically means victorious thrower of the first spear, hahaha, so if i am to go to a 'goddess' party i must go as a goddes of war and victory, surely, and so i found freya and brisingamen).

so, to the point - when was your last DD? i'd like to suggest this (as long as i can figure out who to suggest to). i think it is beautiful and perfect for what the legend seems to call for. amazing work.

I love mythology! doesn't matter the nation, I love it all.

wow . . I have actually never gotten a DD. ever. not in all the time I have been here. never thought about it really! I just create what I create, and am just happy if others like any of it. lol. so that is very sweet of you!

now that is a great compliment! thank you. I really poured my heart into this one . . I adore the legend, and was so worried about doing it justice. all that gold really made my eyes go all wonky. :P

green . . . hmmmmmm. I wonder if I can find green metallic alcion lace?? hmmmmm . . . . now you have my gears going. since I just finished a massive random project (to be posted soon), my brain is just ready for new inspiration! :mwahaha:

I only have one thing to say: in failing, you learn. so long as you keep trying, you will never fail completely. persist . . . anything is possible so long as you never give up on your vision. :)

why thanks! and I did what I could. would help had those silly vikings left better descriptions!

hmmmm .. if you don't count all the time spent twiddling my thumbs waiting for the amber to arrive, all told this whole piece took about 96 hours. give or take a few quarter hours here and there. lots of falling into my sewing! and zoning out while doing bead strands over and over. lol.

Hehehehe. Silly vikings. I could see falling into the beading. I have not really gotten into beading very much, but my gram used to do it all the time when I was a wee child.

they were randomly silly!

I did fall in often . .there is just so much of it! had to back track on the detail beading on the silk part, as my eyes kept getting dazzled by the gold and I would occasionally miss spots. plus, I tend to get lulled into daydreaming when doing massive amounts of swags, and it was really hard to focus on counting. no one in my family really ever did to beadwork . . . cross stitch, embroidery, crewl, crochet, knitting, sewing . . lots! beadwork seems to be my little obsession. ;)

Seems like you come from quite the artsy family. My mom does knitting and sewing and my gram did those and scrap booking. Do you find beads all over your house? I find rings of maile in the weirdest places. I seem to sleep with half a dozen of them every night.

my grandparents have art pieces permanently installed in the Remington Art Gallery in Montana, and my grandmother has a painting on permanent display at the governor's mansion. so yeah, it's a legacy with us. but only 3 out of 15 grandkids have any talent, and my cousins are strictly tat artists. they have no interest in anything else. I have too many interests! too many artsy things that just fascinate me & that I enjoy doing.

I actually do find beads and findings in the most bizarre places! found a copper link in the bathroom once and couldn't for the life of me figure out how it got there. and beads . . heavens, those are in everything. I gave up trying to track them all down!

Wow. That is quite impressive. My family is not that artistic, though my mom had a chance to be a professional clarinet player. I think she turned it down because she was pregnant with me.

My mom always brings me a handful of rings that she finds all over the house. She finds it hilarious that they get in places that you would have never thought

impressive, and very hard to live up to! I think more general obscurity would be preferable. ;) my mother has minimal musical ability . . she can't even draw stick people! seems to skip generations . . .

now that I wouldn't doubt! in my home, that would be rampant, as I have a very rambunctious kitty girl who latches onto anything that even remotely resembles a plaything. ;)

it was a lot, I admit that! more time on this one than any other than my Nightwing one . . which took wayyyy too long just to find the pieces for! >_< I vex myself with my pickiness sometimes. though occasionally it does pay off . . . like waiting for all the right amber pieces for this one. just wish I could have found a decent amber centerpiece . . ah well.
